Sisters Forever Chardonnay 2014
Review by Eric Tansey, CSW
Sorelle per Sempre, Sisters Forever! This wine hails from a little AVA called Paicines in the Central Coast of California. Paicines is the ninth oldest AVA in California and is located about three hours from Paso Robles. Donati Family Vineyards are owned and operated by the Donati family who originally started out as great grape farmers and became great winemakers. The Donati Family is dedicated to sustainable farming, a practice that puts an emphasis on the environment as a whole. The goal in using this technique is to leave the earth in better shape than before the vines were planted on it. Sustainable farming simply means, farming practices that will allow the land to be farmed without causing damage to the eco-system and the community around it while minimizing the carbon footprint, so that the environment in its entirety will be preserved or even improved.
This wine is “un-oaked”– a term that refers to grapes that are fermented in stainless steel barrels and are not introduced to any oak. On the nose, the aromas are tropical, with green apples and melons prevailing. On the palate, the wine exhibits strong green melon characteristics that fade to green apple, and underripe banana. The wine has a medium body mouthfeel and one would not guess that it is un-oaked. This is because a small amount of Pinot Blanc has been blended into the wine to give the wine body and structure while maintaining the freshness and pureness of the fruit. Pair with salmon, baked chicken, alfredo, and with your favorite sister, of course. Cheers!
