Illahe Vineyard Viognier 2014
Review by Eric Tansey, CSW
Viognier is a classic French varietal that is well known for it’s powerful, floral and fruity aromas. Viognier is most well known for it’s dry full bodied white wines of Condrieu, located in the Rhone region of France, but is very rapidly making great strides here in the USA. This dry white wine is handcrafted, sustainably farmed, and family-made since 1983, from the Willamette (pronounced Will-am-it, dammit) Valley in Oregon. Sustainable farming is a practice that puts an emphasis on the environment as a whole. The goal in using this technique is to leave the earth in better shape than before the vines were planted on it. Sustainable farming simply means, farming practices that will allow the land to be farmed without causing damage to the eco-system and the community around it while minimizing the carbon footprint, so that the environment in its entirety will be preserved or even improved. This winery goes as far as to hand pick the grapes and till the land with horse and carriage. It has a beautiful story, a nice label, and the juice is outstanding, making this wine very fun to sell. If you like Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, or Pinot Grigio, then try Viognier.
This wine is aromatic and very friendly to the nose. It has aromas of white flowers, peach, and pear. On the palate, the wine has an immediately luscious mouthfeel. Peach and apricots fading to a lemon-lime finish. The fruit characteristics are balanced with the medium plus level of acidity. When a wine is well rounded, balanced, and true to its origin, yet still unique–that’s when you know you have something special. Pair with Thai food, Chinese take-out, or lobster and crab legs.
