Fragile Dry Rose by Orin Swift
Review by Eric Tansey, CSW
This is another Orin Swift Cellars wine by wine maker David Phinney. This wine hales from Maury appellation located in the Roussillon region of southern France and is considered to be a rare red blend. A rare red blend is simply a blend of grapes that are not typically blended together. These rare blends are hard to come by mainly in the old world, where strict regional wine laws dictate what grapes must be used. David Phinney’s wines are very popular in our store. His pioneer like style is different and unique making wines that are virtually perfect for the wine drinker, connoisseur, and collector . Every wine that he makes seems to be special.
David Phinney started out making wines for various wineries and producers but then ventured out and started his own multinational brand, Orin Swift Cellars, named after his fathers middle name (Orin) and his mother’s maiden name (Swift). David Phinney now owns over 300 acres of grape vines in Southwest France and also produces the famous “Locations” label that is dedicated to making the best wines from some of the best regions and vineyards in the world. Fantastic wines like “E” from Spain and “I” from Italy, Saldo and Papillon, are great examples of these wines.
Taste Characteristics (This is a dry wine)
Very floral and citrus like aromas. On the palate, soft and elegant red fruits like underripe watermelon, red cherry and subtle hints of mineral and slate. This wine exhibits a light to medium body with light acidity that is balanced with fruit and minerality, making it easy to pair with food but fun enough to drink by itself. Pair with, Salmon, mahi-mahi, shrimp, gourmet hotdogs, crab dips, or simply watching the sunset on the beach. Cheers!
