Chateau Gigognan Clos du Roi Châteauneuf du Pape
Review by Eric Tansey, CSW
Châteauneuf du Pape is a wine appellation (AOC) in the southern region of the Cote du Rhone. It is one of the most renowned regions in the world. The name “Châteauneuf du Pape” means “new home of the Pope” or “the Pope’s new castle”. This region is chock full of history, from the trials and executions of the Knights Templars, to the housing of an exiled Pope. Château Gigognan is a fairly new producer in the region, with 39 hectares (about 96 acres) dedicated to red wine production and one hectare (about 2 acres) dedicated to white wine production. All production is certified as Agriculture biologique or Organic by the certifying body, Ecocer.
2010 Chateau Gigognan -Jee-gon-yawn- This wine has aromas of cherries, cola, and chalk. On the front of the palate, the wine has intense raspberry and spice characteristics. The mid-palate portrays the marriage of fruit and classic Rhone terroir as the silky tannins line the sides of the mouth and stick to the teeth. This wine has a meaty and powerful finish that evolves on the palate for what feels like forever. Pair with well-marbled beef, grilled vegetables, rabbit stew, venison, or to celebrate a special event. Cheers!
