Château Musar Jeune 2012
Review by Eric Tansey, CSW
Do you like history? History and wine often go hand and hand, but this wine takes it to the extreme. Château Musar comes from the Bekaa Valley region of Lebanon, about 15 miles from the capital of Beirut. This high altitude region of Lebanon has been producing wines for over 6,000 years, and the wines are even mentioned in the bible several times (Hosea 14:7). Château Musar itself has quite the history. With several vintages made in the face of war, the staff has literally dodged rockets and bullets getting the grapes from the vineyards to the winery. Each vintage is unique and completely different from the last. This is because there are no gimmicks to this wine. All of the wine comes from a very small area and are a direct representation of what the climate, soil, and politics, has imparted to them for that year. The wine is also un-oaked, leaving only the taste from the grapes themselves. The Lebanese have had their share of war and tragedy. Their resilience and relentless pursuit of peace in the face of invasions and civil war, gave rise to the legend of the Phoenix in the 11th or 12th century. The symbolism of the Phoenix can be found on each bottle of Château Musar. Year after year they produce beautiful wines, no matter the circumstances. Every time I open a bottle of Château Musar, I am mystified. The wine to me is as much a symbol of inspiration as it is a liquid. “People will dwell again in his shade; they will flourish like the grain, they will blossom like the vine-Israel’s fame will be like the wine of Lebanon.” Hosea 14:7 -Bible
On the nose of this wine, you find dark berries, dates, and forest-floor aromas. The first sip is inviting as much as it is intriguing, the fresh, soft, dark berry characteristics jump off the tongue. On the mid-palate the taste of spices and dark gravelly soil prevail. The finish leaves something new all together, a taste of dates and prunes. This wine is always a journey, and every vintage is a new path. This is one of those wines that you should google every time you drink it. The story of triumph and defeat, in life and in wine, is an ever changing labyrinth for these winemakers from year to year. This is yet another connoisseur’s dream wine, as well as a wine for anyone who enjoys history or adventure. Enjoy this wine with a good book, lamb, duck, or venison. Cheers!
